George Washington Carver

What makes a person a legend? For George Washington Carver, it was much more than peanuts. Through more
than one hundred artifacts, videos, models, and hands-on interactives, this exhibition presents his extraordinary life—from a birth in slavery to international renown as a scientist and humanitarian. Visitors can:
  • discover how Carver used his gifts of curiosity and persistence to achieve his lifelong mission: to bring practical knowledge to those in need.
  • see a re-created laboratory bench from his tenure at the famed Tuskegee Institute and the actual equipment he used to realize his "mighty vision"—exhausted fields turning green with crops.
  • explore a life-size reproduction of the horse-drawn wagon that he customized with plants, products, and tools and toured across the region to share his ideas.
  • witness how Carver laid the groundwork for organic farming and today's research on plant-based fuels, medicines, and everyday products.
  • meet people whose lives Carver influenced—such as botanists exploring how to grow food in space.

Explore how one person can inspire innovation and change a nation in George Washington Carver.

This exhibition was created by The Field Museum, Chicago, in collaboration with Tuskegee University and the National Park Service.
